Alicia Tyree:
an autobiograhy
I was first inspired to do woodwork in 6th grade woodshop, where a woman, called Mei Mei, was my teacher. Later by age 16 I began an internship in a scene shop for a theater called Equity Library Theater on 106th and Riverside. It wasn't very long before i came to realize that i wanted to make things more permanent, so i opened the Manhattan Yellow Pages and called every cabinet maker and furniture maker in the book. All but one person laughed or turned me away when i sought employment and that was Bob Kalka. He said he might need an extra hand in a couple of weeks and he did indeed call me back two weeks later and thus began my woodworking career.

His shop was on 133rd and Broadway and there was another woodshop in the same building, owned and run by Dan Mack, who Bob later referred me to. That was very fortunate time and I was exposed to so much beauty and technique and space to learn. The shop itself was a thing of beauty and inspiration.

During my transition from Manhattan to upstate New York I worked in an immigrant-run cabinet shop and then I moved to Woodstock where i met accomplished woodworker Paul Henderson who i immediately inquired about a job with. He didn't need help at the time, although i would come to work with Paul for years later on, but referred me to Chris Lehrecke a designer and furniture maker. I worked for Chris for a few years until i was about eight months pregnant at which time I took my leave. I did work for Chris again, but only for a short time. I began working for Paul Henderson occasionally and for his good friend Stephen Robin.

In the last 15 years I've been commissioned by Stephen Robin while weaving in and out of many shops with many great woodworkers of all capacities. Josh Finn, Stewart Reitz, Eric Sheflin, and Dennis Collins are some of the woodworkers I owe thanks to. I grew and learned everything from cabinet making to furniture making to reading architectural drawings, building from them, and installing them, to precise mill work. I learned to maintain tools, and trouble shoot, manage time, and manage a crew. Each woodworker made me better for the next and made clear how far there is to go. I've been fortunate return to the intricate and complex creations of Stephen Robin and the opporrtunity to fabricate beauty in my shop in Olivebridge.

Building my own business has always been the goal but I still enjoy very much subcontracting for my colleagues and welcome the opportunity to work with local builders and artisans who need mill work or any manner of woodwork to help get the job done!
I currently reside in the woods of Olivebridge with my life partner, two daughters, my dog Basquiat and cat Marta.
